2016

  • On Oct.28, one journal paper on image dehazing authored with Dr. Zhigang Liang is accepted by Neurocomputing. 

  • On Oct.2, two papers authored by Liangjiang and Brian are accepted by ISVC as oral presentations. 

  •  On Sept  29, one journal paper on image clustering for social event detection authored by Dr. Bin Xu is accepted by Scientific Programming.

  • On July 14, 2016, Liangjiang successfully defended his PhD thesis. Congratulations! 

  • From May 31-June 3, Dr. Fan offered a summer short course on Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning in Xi'an University of Technology. 

  • A paper co-authored with Dr. Guangfeng Lin is published in Pattern Recognition, Vol. 53, May 2016.

  • On May 31, 2016, Dr. Zhigang Ling's paper on image dehazing using deep learning is accepted by ICIP2016. ! 

  • On March 15, 2016, VCIPL welcomes a visiting scholar, Prof. Yulong Qiao, from Harbin University of Engineering, China.

2015

  • There are some updates from our VCIPL alumni. Song started to work as a System Software Engineer in Hivemapper Inc., CA, and Meng became an Image Processing Engineer in NIH-Naitional Labrary of Medicine (NLM). Xin was promoted to Associate Professor in South University of China and Vijay moved to Honeywell as a Principal Scientists. Congratulations to all of them for their career development. 

  • On Dec. 8, 2015, Xin's paper coauthored with Meng on video-based human walking estimation is accepted by IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology.

  • On Dec. 6, 2015, Meng's paper on human pose estimation is accepted by IEEE Transaction on Image Processing.

  • In Sept. 2015, VCIPL welcomes four visiting scholar/students from China, Dr. Jian Ji from Xidian, Yuhao Wang from USTB, Pei Zhang from NWPU, and Jiyue Wang from SCUT.

  • On July 16, 2015, Aravind and Lin have defended their MS theses successfully. Congratulations!  

  • On July 15, 2015, Song Ge and Meng Ding have defended their PhD theses successfully. Congratulations!

  • On June 29, 2015, Song Ge published a paper in Sensors in the section of Physical Sensors.

  • On April 30, 2015, two papers (with one oral) have been accepted by ICIP2015. 

  • On April 22, 2015, Liangjiang published a paper in Sensors in the special issue "Sensors in New Road Vehicles".

  • On April 21, 2015, VCIPL has three papers accepted by the PBVS2015 workshop that will be held in conjunction with CVPR2015.

  • On Feb. 2, 2015, Kelly Nugent is awarded the Wentz Semester Research Grant for Spring 2015!

  • In spring, 2015, VCIPL welcomes two new members, Narges Nourian (MS student),  and Dr. Zhigang Liu from Hunan University in China (Visiting scholar).

 

2014

  • In fall, 2014, VCIPL welcomes five new members, Lin Guo (MS student), Mehdi Yazdanpour (PhD student), Kelly Nugent (BS student), Dr. Guangfeng Lin (Visiting scholar) and Prof. Yuan Jia (Visiting scholar).

  •  In summer 2014, VCIPL welcomes two new members, Aravind Datla, a MS student, and Dr. Jiangyun Li who is a visiting scholar from USTB (China).

  • On July 17, Bo Li has successfully defended his MS thesis. He is the 11th MS graduate from VCIPL.

  • In April 2014, two papers by Song and Nazuml are accepted by the 10th IEEE Workshop on Perception Beyond Visible Spectrum (PBVS2014) will be held on June 23, 2013 in conjunction with CVPR2014.

  • In April 2014, an open access paper co-authored with Dr. Junding Sun entitled "Concave-convex local binary features for automatic target recognition in infrared imagery" is published by EURASIP Journal of and Image Video Processing.

  •  In Spring 2014, there are two new VCIPL members: Prof. Weiguang Liu from China (second-time visiting scholar) and Tao Tang (MS student). Welcome both of them! 

  • On April 28, 2014, two papers by Song and Nazuml are accepted by the 10th IEEE Workshop on Perception Beyond Visible Spectrum (PBVS2014) will be held on June 23, 2013 in conjunction with CVPR2014.

  • On April 21, 2014, an open access paper co-authored with Dr. Junding Sun (a past visiting scholar from China) entitled "Concave-convex local binary features for automatic target recognition in infrared imagery" is published by EURASIP Journal of and Image Video Processing.
     

2013

  • On Oct. 21, the Special section on Advances in Machine Vision beyond Visible Spectrum (BVS) is published by Computer Vision and Image Understanding (CVIU). This special section was co-edited by Drs. Guoilang Fan, Riad Hammoud (BAE), Firooz Sadjadi (Lockheed Martin) and Behzad Kamgar-Parsi (ONR).

  • On Oct.7, Jiulu Gong's paper entitled "Joint view-identity manifold for infrared target tracking and recognition" was accepted by Computer Vision and Image Understanding (CVIU). Congratulations to him!

  • On Aug. 5, Dr. Bin Xu, Lecture, from Northeastern University, China, joined VCIPL as a visit scholar. His research interests include data mining and machine learning.

  • On Oct.7, Jiulu Gong's paper entitled "Joint view-identity manifold for infrared target tracking and recognition" was accepted by Computer Vision and Image Understanding (CVIU). Congratulations to him!

  • On May 10, Dr. Guoliang Fan was appointed as a visiting professor by his Alma Mater, Xi'an University of Technology, China. 

  • On May 4, VCIPL has four papers accepted by ICIP2013.

  • On Feb. 21, Meng Ding's application of the FG2013 Doctoral Consortium is accepted and he is invited to attend FG2013 in Shanghai, China, April 22-26 with a travel grant.

  • On Jan. 8, Li Bo joined VCIPL as a MS student, and he will work on machine vision for biosystem applications.

2012

  • On Dec. 20, Dr. Guoliang Fan was appointed as a visiting professor by his Alma Mater, Xidian University (photo1,photo2,photo3).

  • On Dec. 10, Meng Ding' paper on human motion modeling is accepted by IEEE FG2013. Congratulations!

  • On Dec. 4, the former PhD student, Dr. Xin Zhang has one paper accepted by Image and Vision Computing (special issue on Machine learning in motion analysis).

  • On Oct. 11, 2012, Prof. Junding Sun from Henan Polytechnic University joined VCIPL as a visiting professor. His research areas include image retrieval and feature extraction.

  • On July 11, 2012, Vijay's paper on infrared target tracking is accepted by IEEE Trans. on Image Processing.

  • On July 1, 2012, Dr. Fan is promoted to full professor and he is also awarded the Cal & Marilyn Vogt Professorship in Engineering.

  • On June 1, 2012, the VCIPL has book chapters published in an IGI Book "Intelligent Data Analysis for Real-life Applications: Theory & Practice".

  • On May 22, 2012, the VCIPL is awarded A three-year OCAST health research project is awarded that is aimed at developing a new clinical motion analysis tool.

  • On May 4, 2012, Song Ge has passed his PhD preliminary exam. Congratulations to him.

  • On May 2, 2012, Meng Ding has passed his PhD preliminary exam. Congratulations to him.

  • On April 17, 2012, the VCIPL has two papers accepted by ICIP2012. One is Meng's paper on structured-guided manifold learning for human motion estimation, and the other is Jiulu's paper on joint view and identity manifold for automated target tracking and recognition.

2011

  • On Aug. 24, Tina's paper on multi-view face recognition is accepted by IEEE Trans. on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Part B: Cybernetics, (Special issue on Subspace and Manifold Learning).

  • On Aug. 22, Vijay's paper on ATR is accepted by EURASIP Journal of Advances in Signal Processing (Special issue on subspace and manifold learning) that is co-authored with Liangjiang and Xin.

  • On Aug. 15, VCIPL has two book chapters accepted by a new IGI Global book "Intelligent Data Analysis for Real-Life Applications: Theory and Practice" that is to be published in 2012.

  • On July 11, Liangjiang Yu successfulled defended his M.S. thesis that focuses on automated tracking and recognition (ATR).

  • On April 15 and 22, VCIPL has two papers accepted by two CVPR workshops. One is authored by Vijay and several other co-authors accepted by OTCBVS2011 and the other is authored by Xin accepted by MLvMA2011. 

  • On March 31, Dr. Fan received the Outstanding Professor Award (2010-2011) from IEEE-OSU at the annual IEEE banquet.

  • On Feb. 8, Xin Zhang has successfully defended her Ph.D. dissertation. She is the sixth Ph.D. graduate in VCIPL. Her dissertation is entitled with "Manifold Learning for Video-based Human Motion Estimation". Congratulations to Xin!

  • .On Jan. 17, VCIPL welcomes a visiting Ph.D. student, Jiulu Gong, from Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), China. Jiulu will be involved in the area of automated target tracking and recognition (ATR).

2010

  • On Dec. 3, Yi Ding has successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation. He is the fifth Ph.D. graduate in VCIPL. His dissertation is entitled with "Probabilistic Graphical Models for Sports Video Mining: Hybrid Generative and Discriminative Approaches". Congratulations to Yi!

  • On Dec. 1, Vijay Venkataraman has successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation. He is the fourth Ph.D. graduate in VCIPL. His dissertation is entitled with "Advanced Machine Learning Approaches for Target Detection, Tracking and Recognition". Congratulations to Vijay!

  • On Sept. 30,  VCIPL welcomes one visiting scholar, Dr. Zuofeng Zhou, from Xian Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics of CAS, China.

  • On Aug. 23, VCIPL welcomes two new Ph.D. students, Song Ge and Meng Ding, both of whom will be involved in human motion analysis research.

  • On July 15, Michael Kruis successfully defended his M.S. thesis. Congratulations to him!

  • On June 13, Vijay received the best paper award from the 7th IEEE Workshop on Object Tracking and Classification Beyond the Visible Spectrum (OTCBVS2010) that was held in conjunction with CVPR2010. Congratulations to him!

  • On May 28, Vijay has successfully defended this proposal and passed the PhD qualify exam on May 28, 2010 that is a significant step for a Ph.D. student. Congratulations to him!

  • On May 19, Yi has one book chapter "Event Detection in Sports Video based on Generative-Discriminative Models " accepted by a new IGI book entitled "Computer Vision for Multimedia Applications: Methods and Solutions". Congratulations to him!

  • On May 13, Vijay has one book chapter "Appearance Learning by Adaptive Kalman Filters for Robust Infrared Tracking " accepted by a new Springer book entitled "Machine Vision Beyond Visible Spectrum". Congratulations to him!

  • On May 13, Xin has one book chapter "Video-based Human Motion Estimation by Part-whole Gait Manifold Learning " accepted by a new Springer book entitled "Machine Learning for Vision-based Motion Analysis. Congratulations to her!

  • On April 3, Xin and David have one conference paper accepted by the ACM Conference on Image and Video Retrieval (CVIR2010) that will be held in Xi'an, China, June 2010. Congratulation to both of them!

  • On Jan. 27, Cheng's paper entitled with "Coupled Region-Edge Shape Priors for Joint Localization and Figure-ground Segmentation" is accepted by the Pattern Recognition. Congratulations to him!

  • On Jan. 21, Xin's paper entitled with "Dual Generative Gait Models for Human Motion Estimation with a Single Camera" is accepted by the Special Issue on New Advances in Video-based Gait Analysis and Applications: Challenges and Solutions of IEEE Trans. Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Part B. Congratulations to her!

  • On Jan. 11, VCIPL welcomes two new PhD students, Brain Yim and Ayesha Siddiqua. Also, two CS PhD students Bo Xu and Jie Yuan will also be affiliated with VCIPL on joint research efforts between Dr. Fan and two CS faculty members.

2009

  • On Dec. 7, Xin Zhang has passed the PhD qualify exam on Dec. 7 that is a significant step for a Ph.D. student. Congratulations to her!

  • In Oct./Nov., VCIPL welcomes two visiting scholars, Mr. Makoto Furuie from Japan and Prof. Weiguang Liu from China.

  • On Aug. 17, VCIPL welcomes two new graduate students, Ning Sun (Ph.D.) and Liangjiang Yu (Ms). 

  • During July, VCIPL has three workshop papers accepted. One is by Yi Ding accepted by the 1st ACM International Workshop on Events in Multimedia (EiMM09) that is in conjunction with the ACM Multimedia Conference in Beijing, China. Xin's paper is accepted by the 2nd IEEE International Workshop on Machine Learning for Vision-based Motion Analysis (MLVMA09) and Cheng's paper is accepted by the 4th International Workshop on Dynamical Vision. Both workshops are in conjunction with ICCV2009 in Kyoto, Japan.

  • On July 16, Dr. Fan received a three-year Health Research Award from OCAST that will study video-based human gait analysis for fall-risk detection. This research will involve a collaborator, Dr. Li-Shan Chou, from the Department of Human Physiology at the University of Oregon.

  • On July 17, Jason and Tom have successfully defended their MS theses. Jason's thesis is about the implementation of a ProCam system for 3D volume data visualization, and Tom's thesis is on 3D modeling of Point Clouds. Congratulations to both of them!

  • On July 12, Yi has one paper entitled "Sport Video Mining via Multichannel Segmental Hidden Markov Models" accepted by IEEE Trans. Multimedia. Congratulations to him!

  • On June 28, VCIPL's former Ph.D. graduate, Thitiporn, has one paper entitled "3-D Retinal Curvature Estimation" accepted by IEEE Trans. Information Technology in Biomedicine. Congratulations to her!

  • On May 13, Yi Ding has passed the Ph.D. qualify exam that is a significant step for a Ph.D. students. Congratulations to him!

  • On April 30, a book chapter by Dr. Fan, Vijay and Frank is included in a new book "Intelligent Video Surveillance" edited by Drs. Yuqian Ma and Gang Qian.

  • On March 26, Vijay and Frank's paper entitled with "Appearance Learning by Adaptive Kalman Filtering for FLIR Tracking" is accepted by the 6th Joint IEEE International Workshop on Objective Tracking and Classification in and Beyond the Visible Spectrum (OTCBVS09).

  • On March 25, Dr. Fan received a REU grant that will support two undergraduate students to do research at VCIPL in 2009-2010.
    On March 16, David was awarded the Wentz award for the second time. He will be working on 3D human modeling.

  • On Feb. 2, 2009, Dr. Fan received a Research Initiation Grant from NASA EPSCoR. This project will focus on using human motion to assess crew vibration and operator state in the shuttle, and it involves a joint effort with the researchers in the NASA Ames Research Center. 

  • On Jan. 28, 2009, the VCIPL web server launched the website of the 6th Joint IEEE International Workshop on Objective Tracking and Classification in and Beyond the Visible Spectrum (OTCBVS09). Dr. Fan is a TPC  co-chair of OTCBVS09 that will be held in conjunction with CVPR2009 in Miami, Florida, June 20, 2009.  

  • On Jan. 7, 2009, Colby Toland joined the VCIPL as a MS student. He was a Wentz undergraduate researcher in the VCIPL in 2004-2005. Welcome him back!

2008

  • On Dec. 17-30, 2008, Dr. Fan had a trip to China, and he visited a few local universities, including Beijing Institute of Technology, Xidian University, Xian Jiaotong University, and Xian University of Technology, where he gave several talks and seminars.

  • On Dec. 17, 2008, the VCIPL has one book chapter accepted in a book "Handbook of Research on Machine Learning Applications"(IGI Global). This book chapter is co-authored by Guoliang Fan and Yi Ding.

  • On Dec. 1, 2008, the VCIPL has one paper accepted by IEEE Trans. Aerospace and Electronics Systems that is co-authored by Xin Fan, Guoliang Fan and Joseph Havilcek (OU). The paper is entitled with "Generative Models for Maneuvering Target Tracking."

  • On Nov. 19, 2008, Cheng Chen has successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation. He is the third Ph.D. graduate in VCIPL. Congratulations to Cheng!

  • On Oct. 20, 2008, the VCIPL welcomes two visiting scholars, Prof. Derong Chen from Beijing Institute of Technology and Ms. Min Geng from China University of Petroleum.

  • On Sept. 30, 2008, the VCIPL has one paper accepted by IEEE Signal Processing Letters that is authored by Frank and Dr. Fan. The paper is entitled with "Graphical Models for Joint Segmentation and Recognition of License Plate Characters" that is an extended version of the one published in ICIP2007.

  • On July 31, 2008, Dr. Fan received a three-year research grant from the Army Research Office (ARO) that focuses on target tracking and recognition. This is a collaborative project led by Dr. Joseph Havlicek (PI) and Dr. Guoliang Fan (Co-PI).

  • On July 7th, 2008, Yi's paper that is entitled with "Multi-channel Segmental Hidden Markov Models for Sports Video Mining" is accepted by the ACM Multimedia Conference 2008 that will be held in Vancouver, BC, Canada, Oct. 27-Nov. 1, 2008.

  • On June 29, 2008, the VCIPL has two papers accepted by the 19th International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR2008) that are Tina's paper on multi-view face recognition and Xin's paper on video-based gait tracking and estimation. Especially, Xin's paper is accepted as an oral presentation. Congratulations to Tina and Xin!

  • On May 27, 2008, Cheng Chen has received the Summer Graduate Fellowship from the Graduate College that provides additional support to Cheng for his research and his trip to CVPR08 in summer. Congratulations to Cheng!

  • On April 15, 2008, Vijay and Frank's paper entitled with "Integrated Target Tracking and Recognition using Joint Appearance-Motion Generative Models" is accepted by the 5th Joint IEEE International Workshop on Objective Tracking and Classification in and Beyond the Visible Spectrum (OTCBVS08).

  • On April 10, 2008, Dr. Fan visited Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center (WMASC) at Old Dominion University (ODU). He served as a judge for the VMASC Student Capstone Conference. He was also invited to give a talk in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at ODU on April 11. 

  • On April 10, 2008, two VCIPL members received special recognitions in the annual IEEE-OSU meeting. Vijay received a special Ph.D. scholarship and Dr. Fan received the Outstanding Professor Award.  

  • On April 9, 2008, Dr. Fan visited the Army Research Lab (ARL) Adelphi, MD, and gave a talk on target tracking and recognition in Dr. Nasser M. Nasrabadi's research group.

  • On March 17, 2008, John and Davis, two undergraduate researchers in VCIPL, have received that the Wentz Project Award that will support them to do research in VCIPL for 2008-2009 under Dr. Fan's supervision. Only three ECEN undergraduate students have received this award, and two of them are from VCIPL. Congratulations to both of them! 

  • On March 7, 2008, Cheng's paper entitled with "Hybrid Body Representation for Integrated Pose Recognition, Localization and Segmentation" is accepted by the 2008 IEEE International Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR2008).  Congratulations to Cheng! 

  • On Feb. 28, 2008, Cheng passed his Ph.D. qualify exam that is a critical step for a Ph.D. student. The committee members have highly complimented his research. Congratulations to him!

2007

  • On Nov. 20, 2007, the VCIPL web server launched the website of the 5th Joint IEEE International Workshop on Objective Tracking and Classification in and Beyond the Visible Spectrum (OTCBVS08). Dr. Fan is the co-chair of OTCBVS08 that will be held in conjunction with CVPR2008 in Anchorage, AK, June 2008.

  • On Nov. 2, 2007, Dr. Lijie Liu visited the VCIPL and gave an interesting talk on his research in the Friday group meeting. As the first VCIPL graduate, Lijie received his M.S. degree from OSU under Dr. Fan's supervision in summer 2003. He recently defended his Ph.D. dissertation at Johns Hopkins University (picture of Drs. Fan and Liu). 

  • On Oct. 23, 2007, Dr. Fan received a travel grant from Oklahoma NASA EPSCoR. This grant will support Dr. Fan to visit NASA Ames Research Center where he will meet with NASA scientists to discuss possible research collaboration in the area of vision-based approaches for safety monitoring. 

  • On July 24, 2007, Xiaomu's paper entitled with "Selecting Salient Frames for Spatiotemporal Video Segmentation" is accepted as a regular paper by IEEE Trans. on Image Processing. This paper is developed from one chapter in his Ph.D. dissertation. Congratulations to Xiaomu! 

  • On July 1, 2007, Dr. Fan is promoted to Associate Professor with tenure by OSU Board of Regents. Thank all VCIPL members both current and past for their hard work in the past six years.

  • From June 18-22, 2007, Dr. Fan led the VCIPL team to attend the CVPR2007 conference in Minneapolis, MN, where the VCIPL members presented four papers in three workshops. Particularly, the past two VCIPL Ph.D. graduates, Xiaomu and Thitiporn, also attended the conference. Here are some pictures of the VCIPL reunion (picture1, picture2, picture3).  

  • On May 14, 2007, Dr. Fan received a REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) supplement grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) that will support two undergraduate students, Andy Hammett and Stephen Nilson, to work at the VCIPL in summer and fall 2007.

  • In April, 2007, there are six conference papers that have been accepted for publication in the major IEEE conferences and workshops. Yi's two papers on video mining have been accepted for publication by ICME07 (International Conference on Multimedia and Expo) and SLAM07 (Semantic Learning Applications in Multimedia). Frank's paper on image segmentation will be presented in ICIP07 (International Conference on Image Processing). Vijay and Frank have two papers on target tracking to be presented in OTCBVS07 (Object Tracking and Classification in and Beyond Visible Spectrum). Thitiporn also has one paper accepted for publication in BMG07 (Beyond Multiview Geometry). SLAM07, OTCBVS07, and BMG07 are workshops to be held in conjunction with CVPR07 in June. Congratulations to all them!

  • On Feb. 12, 2007, Ms. Shan (Sandra) Jiang joined the VCIPL as a Visiting Scholar. Sandra is an associate professor at the China University of Petroleum, Beijing, China, and she will spend half-year at OSU working in the area of face recognition. Welcome her to the VCIPL!

  • On Jan. 19, 2007, Jason and Charlie joined the VCIPL as the M.S. graduate students to work on their M.S thesis related to 3D medical imaging and visualization. Welcome both of them!

  • On Jan. 4, 2007, the VCIPL web server launched the website of 4th Joint IEEE International Workshop on Objective Tracking and Classification in and Beyond the Visible Spectrum (OTCBVS07). Dr. Fan is the Publication Chair of OTCBVS07 that will be held in conjunction with CVPR2007 in Minneapolis, MN, June 22, 2007.

2006

  • From Dec. 10-13, 2006, Dr. Fan and Yi attended IEEE Multimedia Symposium on Multimedia in San Diego, CA. Yi did an oral presentation on his recent research that is entitled with "Camera View-based American Football Video Analysis". 

  • On Dec. 1, 2006, Tom passed his Ph.D. preliminary exam that is entitled with "3D Model Inference for Man-made Point Clouds". He is the seven Ph.D. student in VCIPL to successfully enter the second stage of Ph.D. study. 

  • On Nov. 20, 2006, Chunna (Tina) Tian joined the VCIPL as a visiting Ph.D. student from Xidian University, China. As the first student in a joint Ph.D. training program between OSU and Xidian, she will spend one year at OSU working in the area of face detection and recognition. Welcome her to the VCIPL!

  • From Nov. 6-9, 2006, Dr. Fan led three Ph.D. students, Thitiporn, Xin, and Cheng, to the second International Symposium on Visual Computing (ISVC) held in Lake Tahoe, NV. Cheng gave an oral presentation on human motion segmentation. Thitiporn and Xin presented a poster on their retinal imaging research. Some pictures can be seen from here

  • On Oct. 23, 2006, Vijay has passed his Ph.D. preliminary exam that is entitled with "Integrated Target Tracking and Recognition using Particle Filters". He is the sixth Ph.D. student in VCIPL to successfully enter the second stage of Ph.D. study. 

  • On Oct. 6, 2006, Xin has passed her Ph.D. preliminary exam that is entitled with "Statistical Modeling and Learning Approaches for Social Activity Analysis in Visual Surveillance". Currently, she is the fifth Ph.D. student in VCIPL to successfully enter the second stage of Ph.D. study. 

  • On Oct. 4, 2006, the lab is re-named to the "Visual Computing and Image Processing Lab", and the abbreviation is still "VCIPL". The new name is meant to better reflect the mission and the research focuses of this lab.

  • On Sept. 27, 2006, Yi has passed his Ph.D. preliminary exam that is entitled with "Generative Models for Video Mining". Currently, he is the fourth Ph.D. student in VCIPL to successfully enter the second stage of Ph.D. study. 

  • On June 29, 2006, Anne successfully defended her M.S. thesis. and she is the fifth M.S. (thesis option) student in VCIPL. Congratulations to her!

  • On June 8, 2006, Thitiporn passed her Ph.D. qualify exam that is a critical step for a Ph.D. student. Congratulations to her! She is expected to take the final defense by the end of 2006.

  • On May 19, 2006, two VCIPL undergraduate students, Bryan and Colby are listed on the President's Honor Roll. Only full-time undergraduate students who completed 12 or more hours with a grade point average of 4.00 and with no incomplete grade, were placed on the President Honor Roll. Congratulations to both of them!

  • On May 15, 2006, three new members joined in the VCIPL, Dr. Xin Fan (Post-doc), Matt Watt (M.S. student), and Mike Fergades (REU student). Welcome all of them!

  • On May 1, 2006, Dr. Fan received Halliburton Outstanding Young Faculty Award from the College of Engineering at OSU. The Halliburton Young Faculty Award is provided annually to recognize outstanding overall performance for young Engineering faculty.

  • On April 21, 2006, Colby presents his Wentz project in the annual conference at OSU. His research is regarding data fusion for 3D visualization (picture), and Dr. Fan is his mentor on this project (picture). 

  • On April 20, 2006, Dr. Fan received a REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) supplement grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) that will support two undergraduate students to work at the VCIPL in summer and fall 2006.

  • On March 22, 2006, the VCIPL has been moved to ATRC233 in the Advanced Technology Research Center. The new lab facility has 600 square foot with a nice view to outside. Take a look of the new lab here (picture1, picture2, picture3, and picture4). 

  • On March 21, 2006, Xiaomu Song, who is the first Ph.D. from the VCIPL and currently a Post-doc in Northwestern University, has his third journal manuscripts accepted  by IEEE Trans. on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology. Congratulations to him!

  • On Feb. 7, 2006, Drs. Fan and Yen were invited to visit the Image Science and Machine Vision Group, Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Drs. Fan and Yen presented a technical seminar titled "Advanced Retinal Imaging for Diabetic Retinopathy", which reviewed their recent collaborative work in non-invasive evaluation of diabetic retinopathy by applying advanced retinal imaging approaches.

2005

  • On Dec. 5 and 7, 2005, Thitiporn and Vijay presented their research papers at International Symposium on Visual Computing, Lake Tahoe, NV. 

  • On Nov. 1, 2005, Dr. Fan was invited by Prof. Tiange Zhuang to visit the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Shanghai Jiaotong University, and he gave a talk on "Advanced Retinal Imaging for Non-invasice Disease Study". 

  • On Oct. 24, 2005, Dr. Fan was invited by Prof. Xinbo Gao, to give a talk in the Graduate School at Xidian University, China. The title of his presentation is "Statistical Mixture Modeling for Object-based Video Segmentation" (See some pictures from Album). It has been nine year since he graduated from Xidian University with the M.S. degree in 1996.

  • On Aug. 22, 2005, Yi Ding joined in the VCIPL as a Ph.D. student. He will be working in the field on content-based video analysis. Welcome him!

  • On July 14/15, 2005, three graduate students have successfully defended their theses. Xin and Vijay have received their M.S. degrees, and both of them will continue on their Ph.D. studies in the VCIPL. Xiaomu have received his Ph.D. degree, and he is the first Ph.D. graduate in the VCIPL. Congratulations to all of them! 

  • On June 18, 2005, Dr. Fan was elevated to an IEEE Senior Member. He is currently affiliated with Signal Processing Society and Circuits & Systems Society. 

  • On June 16, 2005, Thitiporn's first journal paper entitled with "Hybrid Retinal Image Registration" was accepted for publication by IEEE Trans. Information Technology in Medicine. Congratulations to her!

  • On March 17, 2005, Colby received OSU Wentz Project Award fro the 2005-2006 academic year. As OSU's largest scholarship, the Wentz Research Projects provide an opportunity for undergraduates to design and conduct research under the supervision of a faculty mentor.  Dr. Fan will serve as the faculty mentor. Congratulations to Colby! 

  • From Jan. to Feb 2005, Xiaomu has two journal papers accepted by IEEE Trans. Geoscience and Remote Sensing and IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters. Congratulations to Xiaomu! 

  • On Feb. 4, 2005, Ms. Anne Krishna Sravanthi joined the VCIPL as a M.S. student. Welcome her!

  • On Feb. 1, 2005, Dr. Fan (Co-PI) received a Research Initiation Grant from Oklahoma NASA EPSCoR. This project involves multidisciplinary remote sensing and GIS research which is jointly led by Dr. Mahesh Rao (PI) from Geography, Dr. Johnson Thomas (Co-PI) from Computer Science, and Dr. Fan from ECEN. The project is entitled with "Using a Multi-resolution GIS-modeling Approach to Evaluate Carbon Sequestration Potential in Texas County, Oklahoma". 

  • On Jan. 28, 2005, Dr. Fan received OSU-Big XII Faculty Fellowship award which will support Dr. Fan to visit University of Colorado in summer 2005 and to develop research collaboration. 

  • In January 2005, three new members joined in the VCIPL, including Dr. Li Tang (post-doc), and Thomas Patten (Ph.D. student), and Donald Stutson (LS-OKAMP undergraduate researcher). Welcome all of them!

2004

  • On Dec. 21th, 2004, Cheng passed his Ph.D. preliminary exam that is entitled with "A Multi-layer Framework for Object-based Video Segmentation". He is the third Ph.D. student in the VCIPL to successfully enter the second stage of Ph.D. study. 

  • On Dec. 8th, 2004, Xiaomu successfully passed the Ph.D. qualify exam, the major step prior to the final defense. He is the first Ph.D. student in the VCIPL who passed this exam. Congratulations to Xiaomu!

  • On Dec. 1st, 2004, Ginto successfully passed the M.S. defense. He is the second M.S. graduate (thesis option) in the VCIPL. Congratulations to Ginto (picture1, picture2, picture3, and picture4)! 

  • On Aug 16th, 2004, Mr. Vikay BVenkataraman and Ms. Xin Zhang joined the VCIPL as M.S. graduate students and research assistants. Welcome both of them.

  • On July 23rd, 2004, the VCIPL is moved from ES402 to ES410 which is more spacious. Here is a new look of VCIPL, (picture1, picture2, and picture3). 

  • On July 20th, 2004, Dr. Fan received a 3-year research grant from Army Research Office (ARO). This is a collaborative project between OSU and University of Oklahoma (OU). Dr. Joseph Havlicek is the Principal Investigator (PI), and Dr. Fan is Co-PI. The project is entitled with "Integrated Target Detection, Tracking, Classification, and Learning for Dual-band Infrared Imagery".

  • On May 13th, 2004, Dr. Fan received the National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program award. Dr. Fan's 5-year CAREER project will focus on video understanding at both the object-level and scene-level. 

  • On May 8th, 2004, Dr. Fan was awarded the Halliburton Excellent Young Teacher Award from the College of Engineering at OSU. 

  • On Jan. 14th, 2004, Mr. Cheng Chen (Ph.D. student) joined the VCIPL. Welcome him!

2003

  • On July 27, 2003, VCIPL members had a farewell party for Lijie at Dr. Fan's home (pictures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5). Lijie received his M.S. degree in Summer 2003, and he is the first graduated student at VCIPL.  

  • On July 1st, 2003, VCIPL is expanded by adding a new lab space at 405 Engineering South where the biomedical imaging group (BIG) will be working on the OCAST Health Research project, see the BIG members (picture1, picture2).

  • On June 1, 2003, Drs. Johnson Thomas (PI, Computer Science), Guoliang Fan (Co-PI), Mahesh Rao (PI, Geography) received a research grant from OSU to build an integrated Web-GIS system for environmental quality and resource management. 

  • On April 20, 2003, Dr. Guoliang Fan (PI) and Dr. Gary Yen (Co-PI) received a three-year research grant from OCAST Health Research Program to work on Advanced Retinal Imaging for Non-invasive Disease Study. 

  • On Feb 1st, 2003, IEEE Signal Processing Letters published Lijie Liu's first international journal paper which is also the first one authored by the Graduate student at VCIPL. Congratulations to Lijie!

  • On Jan. 17, 2003, Dr. Guoliang Fan (PI) received a Research Initiation Grant from Oklahoma NASA EPSCoR. The project will involve a multidisciplinary research team including Dr. Mahesh Rao (Geography) and Dr. Johnson Thomas (Computer Science). They will develop a prototype Web-GIS decision support system for environment quality and resource management.

  • On Jan. 13, 2003, Ginto Cherian (M.S. student) joined in the VCIPL as graduate students supervised by Dr. Guoliang Fan. Welcome him to the VCIPL!

  • On Jan. 12, 2003, Thitiporn's first paper was accepted for presentation at the IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS 2003) that will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, May 25-28, 2003. She will have her first international conference experience in her hometown! Congratulations to her!

  • On Nov, 14, 2002, Thitiporn passed the Ph.D. preliminary exams with the excellent performance. Congratulations to her!

  • On Oct. 16, 2002, Dr. Guoliang Fan Dr. Mahesh Rao have received Oklahoma NASA EPSCoR Travel Grant which will support both of them to visit NASA Stennis Space Center, MS, in November 2002. 

  • On Aug. 6, 2002, Lijie, Xiaomu, and Yan Dong presented their first papers in the 45th IEEE International Midwest Symposium Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems (MWSCAS), Tulsa, OK. They reported their most recent research on JPEG image coding, Bayesian image segmentation, and document image segmentation, see publications

  • On April 22, 2002, Dr. Guoliang Fan received a grant from Environmental Institute's Center for Water and Energy Research program. In this project, Dr. Fan will collaborate with Dr. Mahesh (Geography) on developing a GIS-based tool for Automated Feature Information Retrieval from multisource geospatial data. The proposed project will be extended to build an efficient decision-tool for natural resource management and monitoring based on various geospatial data, such as satellite imagery, elevation, slope, and soil data, etc.

  • On March 8, 2002, Lijie and Xiaomu attended the Research Symposium held by OSU Graduate College. Lijie presented his research on motion-oriented video segmentation (in front of the poster, discuss with attendee). Xiaomu gave a presentation on semi-supervised image segmentation (in front of the screen, in process).

  • On Jan, 4, 2002, Mr. Lijie Liu and Ms. Thitiporn Chanwimaluang join the VCIPL as Ph.D. student supervised by Dr. Guoliang Fan. Welcome both of them to VCIPL (group picture)!

  • On Jan. 4, 2002, VCIPL has been moved to 402 Engineering South. There is a new look of VCIPL.

2001

  • On Nov. 2, 2001, Dr. Guoliang Fan was awarded NASA EPSCoR Travel Grant which will support Dr. Fan to visit NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD, on November 28, 2001.

  • On Aug. 20, 2001, Mr. Xiaomu Song, was admitted to the Ph.D. program in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He was also awarded the ECEN Graduate Scholar package. Mr. Song is the first graduate student in the VCIPL under the supervision of Dr. Fan.

  • On Aug. 20, 2001, with the generous support from ECEN and CEAT at OSU, the Visual Communication and Image Processing (VCIPL) was founded. Dr. Fan is the Director of the VCIPL. The VCIPL is currently located in 313 Engineering North.

  • On Aug. 16, 2001, Dr. Guoliang Fan joined the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Oklahoma State University as an Assistant Professor, after he received his Ph.D.'s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Delaware.
